When Eye Land

"When Eye Land" is artist Star Feliz’s debut monograph, published by Printed Matter in NYC. The book brings together a multivalent exploration of self, identity, and memory in the face of a colonial past. Artist and healer Feliz assembles an engaging remix of maps, family photos, historical illustrations, and letters grounded in critical fabulation to tell the often-brutal history of the Dominican Republic and its people, including that of Feliz’s immediate family and their Afro-Taíno ancestral past. Studio Rock City collaborated closely with Star Feliz on the editing, design, and production of the book.

When Eye Land garnered critical attention after being shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture first Photobook award.

The book functions as a summary report, gathering materials from a wide array of sources, including Santo Domingo museums and institutions, American universities, books, magazines, the Library of Congress, and the Internet. 181 images were carefully selected and fully referenced in the book's index. While it is an art monograph, the work maintains a strong academic grounding.

Taking inspiration from the published journals of Christopher Columbus, the book is bound in green leatherette silkscreened in gold, while the interior images are reproduced on satisfyingly toothy paper, and accented throughout via the use of a gold Pantone ink. Color reproductions of family photos from the author's archive are glued in at various points.

The book received critical recognition, including being shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture First Photobook Award [here] and included on the Griffin Museums list of 20 of the most extraordinary and innovative books.
