September Spring

September Spring is a book and record project by artist Sam Falls, documenting a month-long performance at The Kitchen in 2015. Conceived as a tribute to his godbrother, Jamie Kanzler, who passed away suddenly in 2013, the project combines photographs of the performance, Falls’ paintings, and a vinyl pressing of Kanzler’s music released under the name Odd News. Studio Rock City collaborated with Sam on the editing, design, and production of the book.

The publication is designed as a comprehensive record of the performance. Its pages mirror the staging of the event, featuring images captured every 10 seconds, arranged in a timeline, along with a map of the performance space and color stills at key moments. The book spans 84 pages, measures 11.85” x 11.85”, and is offset printed with six spot colors, with a distinct color assigned to each section of the performance.

The book also includes texts reflecting on the project and Kanzler’s life: Lumi Tan writes about the performance, while Sam Falls, Jenn Pelly, and Trip Warner offer meditations on Kanzler’s creative spirit, illuminating his work as both poet and musician.
